SGMA History

When T. Michael Flowers returned to Georgia in 1955, his singular focus was 'church planting.' That purpose became the goal of the Southern Gospel Mission Association (SGMA). In 1971, SGMA incorporated with the sole purpose of "establishing of New Testament Churches." SGMA's initial thrust was in the Southeastern portion of the United States. Over time, our activities spread beyond the borders of the Southeastern United States and even the United States, with efforts extending to Kenya on the east coast of the continent of Africa. Regardless of the geography, the goal was "the establishing of New Testament Churches"–always has been and always will be.

About the Founder

Dr. T. Michael Flowers

Bro. Flowers, as he was affectionately called by everyone, was born in 1920, in Mangrove Cay, Andros, Bahamas. At age 17, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior, and was called by God to a life of Christian service. He studied at the Bible College in Glasgow, Scotland (1947-1949. After ministering in England, Scotland, and Canada, he came to the United States and lived in Detroit, Michigan, before eventually coming to Savannah in 1955. Under his leadership, he led the establishment of the Southern Gospel Mission Association (SGMA) incorporating it in 1971.

In the early 1980s, he and his wife, Ella, moved to Decatur, Georgia, to continue their service to God. The International Bible Institute and Seminary in Plymouth, Florida, recognized his scholarly contributions to Christendom and awarded him a doctoral degree in 1985. In 1990, Dr. T. Michael Flowers was commended and awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree by the then Carver Bible College. Bro. Flowers was very well read, a proper student of the Word and traveled extensively. In 2004, his beloved wife of 52 years, Ella, went home to be with her Lord and on October 26, 2015, the two were heavenly reunited forever.
